Scope and Content The wall in this picture is the north wall of the Aberdeen Carmelite friary church, probably constructed in the 14th century. The top stones are part of the actual wall, whereas the stones underneath are its foundation. The foundation at this point is very deep, much deeper than elsewhere in the wall line. There is also a pit at this point, which appears to have been dug at the same time as the wall was constructed. It is possible that it is a quarry pit which was dug for sand, gravel and clay to build the church. It may also be that the church was higher at this point, possibly for a tower, and needed a deeper foundation to support the extra weight. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
