Scope and Content These copper alloy objects were excavated at the site of the medieval Carmelite friary during the excavations there in 1994. The top one is probably a hinge from a book or casket. The lower object may be a buckle pin. Many copper alloy objects were found during these excavations. Many reflect the work of the Carmelites as preachers and teachers: book and casket fittings, candlesticks and keys. Others, found in burial soils, include pins, twisted wires and lace ends. These were all used for securing the shrouds in which bodies were often buried. Iron coffin fittings and nails were also found in graves. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
