Scope and Content This picture was taken just after an archaeological excavation was started at the site of the Carmelite friary in 1994. Previous excavations in 1980-1 had revealed that the Carmelite church was towards the left of this trench. The deep trench towards the left of the picture was for a sewer pipe laid in the late 19th century. It had cut through some of the soils within the church, disturbing some of the burials which had taken place there. The wall of the church can just be seen to the right of this trench, but most of the other features are 18th and 19th century in date. The planks are being used to help the excavators to get barrows of soil off the site on to the spoil heaps. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
