Scope and Content The area in the centre of this picture is part of the interior of the medieval Carmelite church excavated in Aberdeen in 1994. The excavation has just started and the trench is still quite shallow. The north wall of the church can be seen on the right. Many people had been buried in the ground beneath the inside of the church. It is not possible to determine exactly how many people were buried there, but 200 skeletons were found in approximately one-third of the church. In the soil just below the buckets, a cut can be seen. This was the grave cut for one of the latest burials within the church. It probably took place after the Reformation (1560) when the church was no longer in use but was a ruin. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
