East wall of Carmelite friary church

Description East wall of Carmelite friary church

Scope and Content Just after the major excavations at the Carmelite friary, the Green, Aberdeen in 1994, new sewer pipes were laid in the adjacent Carmelite Street. This trench contained a large wall, which is thought to be the east wall of the friary church. The wall can be seen in this photograph as a lighter area bordered by the red and white scales (which each measure 1m in length). Because the trenches dug in Carmelite Street were only 1m wide, it was not possible to see much more of this wall. The wall was partially excavated to make way for the sewer pipes, but much of it remains underground, for future archaeologists to examine when the sewer pipes need replacing next time. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
