Scope and Content German stonewares are found on most sites in Aberdeen in small quantities. This is the inside of the base of a Siegburg jug imported into Aberdeen in the 14th or 15th century. This very fine stoneware was the earliest imported into Aberdeen. Stoneware is pottery which has been fired to over 1200 degrees centigrade. That makes the particles in the clay fuse like glass and makes it watertight. Earthenware, which was produced in many places in Scotland at that time was not watertight. The indentation in the centre of this jug base was caused by the potter's finger during the throwing of the vessel. This confirms that the vessel was made on a wheel. The inside of the vessel also appears to have been wiped with something like a cloth. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
