Scope and Content This is a phalanx (small bone of the finger) from the hand of a middle aged male who was buried in the graveyard to the east of Aberdeen Carmelite friary church in the medieval period. The finger bone has a bony nodule sticking out from its left hand side. It is not known what caused this bony nodule to develop. The man probably had no symptoms but may have been able to feel the lump sticking out of the bone. This man had also lost six molar teeth (the large back teeth) well before he died and had lesions in his backbone which may have been caused by trauma or old age. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
