Scope and Content The skeleton in the centre of this photograph (above the black and white scale, which measures 25cm) was buried within the walls of the Aberdeen Carmelite friary church. The wall of the church can be seen on the left of this picture. During two seasons of excavation around the friary church, nearly 200 skeletons were carefully uncovered, cleaned, photographed, drawn and lifted. There were females and males, and children of all ages from newly born to teenagers. The skeletons were excavated and then studied by a human skeletal biologist who determined sex, age and height at death, and identified any injuries and diseases from which the individual had suffered. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
