Scope and Content The stone in the centre of this picture has been incised with a mark made by a mason. The stone was part of the church of the Carmelite friary, the Green, Aberdeen. The black and white scale measures 50cm. Masons' marks are frequently found on medieval buildings. They established responsibility for the execution of a piece of work and assisted in the verification of wages. Each mason had a 'signature'. This is an M on its side with a tail. This site was quite disturbed by modern sewer pipes, one of which can be seen in the background of this photograph. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
