Scope and Content The rectangular cobbled area in the centre of this picture (the red and white scales measure 1m each) is a fireplace which was found in the west range of the friary. The neatly laid cobbles had been heavily burnt and partially covered with burnt clay. An earlier fireplace was discovered under this cobbled example. It was constructed of ceramic tiles set on their ends and forming a roughly rectangular area. The room in which this fireplace had been built may have been a kitchen as a drain was found in one wall. The building also had a fresh water supply via a lead pipe which ran through the friary, and may have used a source in the Green. SCRAN 'when' data: 1273 foundation of Aberdeen Carmelite friary 1273 - 17th century burials at the friary 1560 the Reformation: friary abandoned 1336 friary damaged by the Fire of Aberdeen.
