Unattributed.Cross-section of the tower at Torthorwald Castle, Dumfries and Galloway A motte-and-bailey castle was probably erected here by the de Tothorwald family in the 12th century, succeeded by a stone tower built in the late 13th century. The interior was extensively remodelled in the late 14th or early 15th century. This cross-section shows the extent of the reconstruction work within the tower. Both the new vaults and the thickened supporting walls can be seen, the lower vault indicated by a dotted line. In 1587 Torthorwald was acquired by the Douglases though marriage, who retained possession of the castle until around 1890. The tower was last occupied in the around 1630, though by the end of the 17th century it lay abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
