Scope and Content Crieff is a former market town in Strathearn. James Square is the town centre and the fountain was built in 1894. It was James Drummond, 3rd Duke of Perth, who laid out James Square. He also established a flax works, which was destroyed by Government troops after Culloden. Crieff developed as a resort town in the 19th century and is still a popular holiday place. Cattle markets were held regularly, and Rob Roy McGreggor was a frequent visitor. He and his men defied Government troops here in 1714, waking the populace by ringing the bell and regaling them with songs of rebellion, before making their escape. Crieff was inevitably caught up in the 1715 and 1746 Uprisings, and it was here in the Drummond Arms that Prince Charles Edward Stuart held his last Council of War before the ill-fated Battle of Culloden in April 1746. The Drummond Dukes of Perth were loyal to the exiled Scottish King James VIII and paid dearly for it as their estates were confiscated after this final defeat.
