Scope and Content A large stone mansion house with a drum tower and square towers at the corners, dormer windows and an ornamental ironwork balcony with stairs to ground level. There is a daisy covered lawn surrounded by yew hedge in the foreground. Gardeners are standing behind the specimen tree on the lawn. Urns on plinths can be seen before the house over the yew hedge and creepers are climbing up the columns supporting the balcony. Balcaskie is an L-shaped tower house dating from 1630, purchased from the Moncrieffs by Sir William Bruce in 1665, who extended and modified it and laid out the Italianate gardens. It was altered again in the 18th century, and in the 19th by William Burn.
