Scope and Content A square building with pilasters surmounted by a stone drum and dome in a formal park with gravel paths, flowerbeds and trees. The building is shored up due to mining subsidence. Hamilton was the centre of a coal mining district and the Low Parks area has suffered much from subsidence. The Mausoleum was designed by David Bruce in 1840 and built in 1850. The 10th Duke of Hamilton was buried in the Mausoleum in an Egyptian sarcophagus, but was reburied in the 1920s in the Bent Cemetery a mile away.
