Description The Mausoleum [Low Parks], Hamilton

Date 1/9/1937 to 30/9/1937

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 449097

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Large gravel area before a neoclassical building with pilasters and blind arcading set above a rusticated stone base with entrance arches and recumbent stone lions on each side. The arches in the base have carved heads on the keystones and the openings are shored up with wooden beams due to ground subsidence. Hamilton was the centre of a coal mining district and the Low Parks area has suffered much from subsidence. The Mausoleum cost £150,000 to build in 1850 and was designed by David Bruce in 1840. The 10th Duke of Hamilton was buried in the Mausoleum in an Egyptian sarcophagus, but has since been reburied elsewhere.
