Scope and Content A broad river is crossed by two multi-arched bridges, one road and one rail, a cityscape of tenement blocks, domed classical building and chimneys in the background. There is a statue on a tall column amongst the buildings. Cars, a tram, lorries and horses and carts are on the road bridge and people are walking on wide pavements. Locomotives and wagons of a goods train cross the adjacent railway bridge, with a plain building arching over the track at the end. Glasgow Central Station was opened in 1879. The railway bridge was built by William Arrol who later built the Forth and second Tay railway bridges. The King George V Bridge was built in1924-1928.
