Scope and Content An ornate fireplace with statues of nymphs and dogs, cherubs and thistles and other reliefs. The fireplace reliefs show scenes from Robert Burns's 'Tam o' Shanter', with the lyric ploughman poet and his cottage represented in the topmost scene. The mansion was once owned by the Coats family, who commissioned a local man, James Davidson, to make wood carvings depicting some of the songs and poems of Robert Burns. The work was begun at the turn of the 20th century and took four years to complete.
