Scope and Content Marble figures representing a ploughman looking up to a draped figure hovering above his head, with a memorial slab below. Burns is buried in St Michael's Church (built in 1750) which contains the Burns family pew. The mausoleum stands in the graveyard. The figure hovering above his head represents his muse. Robert Burns (1759-1796) was a ploughman and exciseman who became a world renowned poet and songwriter and was hailed as the 'ploughman-poet' in Edinburgh when his first poems were published. He settled in Dumfries and remained there until his death.
