Scope and Content A road, with people walking on the pavement, curves round a green before a ruined abbey. The west gable end of the church has gablets of a Galilee porch above the main door and also lancet windows and the remains of a rose window. The projecting wing has a gateway arch, buttresses and a square tower at the end. Arbroath was a daughter house of Kelso Abbey, founded by William I who is buried before the high altar, for the Tironensian monks (reformed Benedictines). The church was dedicated to Thomas a Becket, the current buildings dating from the 13th century.
