Scope and Content A vast expanse of lawn bisected by a driveway lies before a large house with creepers at ground floor level. Shrubs and trees line the sides of the lawns on either side of the house. The house is built of stone and has a symmetrical central block flanked by large full height wings. The roof line is crowded with chimney stacks. The Hirsel has been the seat of the Earls of Home since 1611. The present house was started in the 18th century and added to in the 19th century.
