Scope and Content A rocky seashore with a large extended tower house rising up behind a high sea wall with a projecting battlemented and turreted terrace beside the castle. A range of low outbuildings can be seen in the distance above the wall. The central tower has battlement and corner turrets at the top, with the surrounding building having crow stepped gables. The medieval tower house was originally owned by the Cheyne family and eventually owned by the Dunbars of Hempriggs. In the mid 19th century the buildings were restored by David Bryce (1803-1876), preserving the two vaulted halls and stairways built into the thickness of the walls. 18th century doocots are preserved nearby.
