It was designed by Alexander Nasmyth in the style of the Roman Temple of Vesta at Tivoli at the request of Lord Gardenstone, a noted eccentric. The marble and mosaic pumproom was refurbished in 1888 by the publisher, William Nelson, as was the statue which represents Hygieia, the goddess of health.
