Scope and Content A formal garden before a large stone tower house with turrets, balustrades and crow step gables. A long single storey wing, partly covered by creeper, runs parallel to the garden on the left. Roses and other plants are festooned from posts on each side of the main path. A fountain divides the path into two parts and there is a wide herbaceous border on the left before the wing. This house is the home of the Maitland family and the Earls of Lauderdale; the current building was started in ca 1595, remodelled in 1670-1696 and finally restored in the 19th century. It has sumptuous state rooms.
