Description Huntly House, Bakehouse Close
Date 19/1/1935 to 19/1/1935
Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland
Catalogue Number DP 448614
Category On-line Digital Images
Scope and Content A narrow cobbled close with tall stone buildings, one of which has an archway or pend. The old walls have areas of stucco, timber cladding and dressed stone. There is an old gas mantle lantern on a wall bracket at centre right. Huntly House stands on the west side of Bakehouse (formerly, Hammermen's) Close, and may take its name from the Gordon family; the Dowager Duchess and her son, the Lord Adam Gordon, both stayed in a lodging house in the Canongate in the 18th century. Amongst its many items of interest is the marriage contract of Agnes Murray of Elibank - or 'Muckle-mouth'd Meg' - and William Scott of Harden, from whom Sir Walter Scott is descended. See JV-14143[A]. See also See RMA-H5766.
