Clunie Castle, Loch Clunie

DP 448590

Description Clunie Castle, Loch Clunie

Date 27/10/1934 to 27/10/1934

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 448590

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A view from a lochside reed bed towards the ruins of a fortified house showing amongst the trees on a small offshore island. A wooded shore and cultivated fields are seen in the distance. A flock of swans to left of islet. The origins of Clunie Castle are lost in the mists of time: it is said to have been built by George Brown, Bishop of Dunkeld1(485-1514), and to have been a residence of the Earls of Airlie, which may be true as they owned the estate until 1892. The loch was well stocked with several varieties of fish. The islet appears to be a crannog, an artificial island constructed by early lake-dwellers.
