Scope and Content A massive corner turreted tower house stands on a high terrace above a long rough grass slope. Later wings stand on each side of the castle with trees flanking the whole building. The wing on the right has a fanlight doorway and two square bay windows. In 1306 King Robert I was defeated by the Earl of Pembroke in a battle here. Margaret Tudor (1489-1541), wife of James IV, lived and died here. The present castle was built in the mid 17th century and is one of the last tower houses to have been built.
