Scope and Content A close view of a Norman doorway with dogtoothed moulding and an ironwork gate or grille. The doorway is part of a ruined ecclesiastical building. The roofline of the missing porch has been cut into the stonework. The cornerstone has three animals carved on it. A gravestone is seen in the left foreground. Whithorn was the site of the earliest Christian Scottish mission, founded by St Ninian ca. 400. He died and was buried here in 430 AD, and was possibly also born at Whithorn.
