Scope and Content A large turreted Scottish baronial house with a central tower is surrounded by rough grass, rhododendrons and trees. An overgrown terrace wall stands in the foreground. An entrance arch can be glimpsed through the scrubs. The castle has many turrets, battlements and mullioned windows. It consists of a central 16th century tower surrounded by mainly 1870s additions. Hoddom Castle dates from the 1550s and has had several phases of extension. Sir Walter Scott visited here in the early 1800s and set parts of his novels 'Sir Guy Mannering' and 'Redgauntlet' nearby. In 1935 the castle was used as a youth hostel.
