Scope and Content A low ceilinged cottage interior crammed with books, manuscripts, paintings, busts, statues and other artefacts, some in display cases. A carpet part covers the flagstone floor. Several portraits of Burns are seen above the fireplace and decorating the walls. There is a large decorated bowl in a display case. Long tables; occasional table. Robert Burns (1759-1796) began life in Ayrshire as a ploughman and exciseman and was feted in Edinburgh as the 'ploughman-poet' when his first poems were published. He moved to Dumfries to become a full time exciseman and remained there until his death.
