Scope and Content A night scene of a domed classical style building on a busy city street, with a church steeple rising above shops and offices in the background. There are many people walking in the street, and trams and cars on the road. The front of the 'Old College ' is executed in Craigleith ashlar and has a Roman triumphal arch flanked by columns round the entrance. The University was founded by James VI (1566-1625) in 1583. The building was designed by Robert Adam (1728-1792) in 1789. The dome was added in 1886-9 by Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) and is crowned by the golden figure of a youth bearing the torch of learning.
