Scope and Content The statue of a regal figure on a stepped plinth beside ornamental wrought iron gates and railings at the entrance to a palatial residence. The figure is set in a semicircular walled enclosure, and the gateposts are capped with arabesque and crown finials. Holyroodhouse began as the guesthouse of Holyrood Abbey. It was later remodelled for the wedding of King James IV to Margaret Tudor in 1503. King James V added the tower. It is still the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.
