A roadside stone acts as a memorial to Covenanter John Hunter, who was shot here for his beliefs. The Devil's Beef Tub is also known as the Marquis of Annandale's Beef Stand, and is where the Johnstones hid cattle rustled in raids on neighbouring clans, the Maxwells in particular.
