Scope and Content A substantial Scottish baronial style house, with stone and brickwork walls, set in formal gardens with railed arcades and ornamental walls. There are topiary and specimen trees in the pleasance. A baronial style mansion house erected on the river Tweed by Sir Walter Scott in 1817-1821. Scott called the house Abbotsford after the monks from nearby Melrose Abbey, who at one time had a crossing there. Most of the Waverley novels were written here.
