Scope and Content The extensive ruins of a Gothic church set in a crowded graveyard with many upright headstones and table tombs. A railed plot with tombstones is on the left, by the south entrance to the church. The transepts and choir survive to roof height and have tall windows with complex tracery. There is a bellcote at the roof apex above the south entrance. Flying buttresses are visible behind the south transept along the nave wall. The Cistercian monastery was founded in 1136 by David I (1084-1153) and rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries after destruction by Richard II (1367-1400).
