Scope and Content Bare rock promontory with a tall slender lighthouse and buildings surrounded by a whitewashed wall. The buildings have tall chimney stacks and projecting pediments placed symmetrically on the front facade. A broad reach of sea and hills lies beyond the point. The lighthouse was built in 1849 by engineer Alan Stevenson (1807-1865). It was one of the last stone-built Northern Lighthouses. In 1927 it was converted from a fixed light to group-flashing, to enable ships to recognise it more quickly.
