Scope and Content A view across a sea bay of an eroded coastline with the remains of an ancient castle situated on a rock promontory in the background. Many seaweed covered rocks outcropping in the sea in the foreground. The castle remains consist of a large square bailey sitting on the end of the promontory. The promontory has steep cliff sides cut by deep gullies and stacks reaching out into the sea. Two battles occurred here. In April 1296 the English army overwhelmed the Scots and took many hostages. In 1650 Cromwell invaded; he was pushed back to Dunbar where the Scots made a tactical mistake and attacked and were heavily defeated.
