Scope and Content A part ruined fortified house with ivy-clad walls built on a mound above a bend in a deep wooded gorge with a river. The river flows swiftly over a shallow bed with rapids and many boulders, curving past the foot of a high rock cliff. The house consists of a ruined creeper covered tower and walls and a baronial house with turrets and large windows. The castle consists of a 17th century mansion built on to a ruined 15th century tower house. The mansion was built in 1638 by the poet William Drummond. Caves in the cliffs below the house are said to have been used by the Picts and Robert the Bruce.
