Scope and Content A substantial castle stands on a steep hill above a tree lined river. Dark clouds in the sky contrast with the white castle walls. The river is broad and shallow with bare trees on the banks and pasture fields beside. The castle consists of a stone tower keep with a harled or whitewashed mansion house wing built between it and the river. The castle is owned by the Roses. In 1460 they built a tower and in the 17th century added the mansion wing. Queen Mary was entertained in the keep in 1562. Prince Charles Edward stayed in the mansion in 1746, three days before Culloden, and the next day Cumberland visited the castle.
