Scope and Content A long slender railway bridge crossing a wide river estuary, with the central section missing. Iron girder support piers have gone from the centre leaving stone pier bases showing above the water. A boat is moored beside one pier and there is a large town on the hills across the river. The bridge was designed by Sir Thomas Bouch and built for the North British Railway. The original bridge was opened in May 1878 and collapsed on the night of 28 December 1879 as a passenger train was crossing to Dundee, with the loss of around 75 people. It was replaced in 1887.
