Scope and Content A substantial castle is sited on the top of a coastal hill with mixed woodland covering the steep slopes below the castle and above the rocky foreshore. Seaweed covers the rocks and pebbles below the tide line. The castle has a high battlemented terrace wall before it and several protruding towers. At the back of the beach a stone wall revets a grass slope in the mid distance. Wemyss Castle was built in the 15th and added to in later centuries. In 1565 Mary, Queen of Scots is said to have met Darnley here. After 1660 the 2nd Earl of Wemyss moved from nearby MacDuff's Castle into Wemyss Castle. The local coal seams formed the basis of the Earls of Wemyss' wealth and Coaltown was the miners' home.
