Scope and Content The ivy covered remains of an ancient abbey with a Gothic arch at mid centre. Sheep are lying on the mown grass in the foreground. A steep hill forms the skyline beyond the ruins. Most of the ruined walls stand to a height of three or four feet with some sections standing higher. The roofs of two cottages can be seen beyond the low walls on the right. The abbey was founded in 1178 by David, Earl of Huntingdon and was a daughter house of Kelso Abbey. It was sacked in 1543 by the local population and reformed by John Knox in 1559. Since then it has been used as a source of building stone.
