Description Mugdrum Cross, Newburgh

Date 1/1/1878 to 31/12/1878

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 447904

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A decorated square stone pillar set on a stone plinth surrounded by a woodland garden with laurel shrubs, and mature conifers rising up against the sky. The cross shaft is missing from the head of the cross with its arms and nimbus, and it is waisted above the base. The front face is covered with much eroded carving forming three panels showing men on horseback hunting deer with dogs. This is a 10th century Pictish cross, one of the few crosses still set in its original position and on its original base. The cross marked the boundary of the Lindores Abbey land.
