Scope and Content A substantial mansion house with a crest and a flagpole on the right wing, set in landscaped parkland. There are climbing plants on the frontage and ornamental walls around the formal garden. Built by Sir William Maxwell Stirling, Bart. (1818-1878) scholar and designer of the house and pleasure gardens. The house was filled with fine art works, books and furniture. A model of the steading was exhibited in Kensington Museum.
