Scope and Content A lighthouse with chimneys of adjacent buildings rising above the outer walls stands on a clifftop plateau. A long low stone wall divides the pasture on the plateau. A cove with a pebble beach and rock outcrops stretching into the sea lies at the foot of the cliff in the foreground. A plank bridge with rope handrail connects two rock outcrops. A rock stack stands in the water beyond the cliffs. The lighthouse was built in 1849 by the engineer Alan Stevenson (1807-1865). The lantern used was a new style with diagonal framing which did not cut off the light in any direction and this was adopted as the standard for later lighthouses.
