Scope and Content An avenue of bare slender trees lining the drive leading to a castellated entrance gate of a priory and grounds, with a turreted bell tower and pinnacled chapel (?). The Priory was built in 1813 by Lady Mary Lindsay Crawford, who succeeded her brother, the 22nd Earl of Crawford, in 1808. The building fell into ruin but was restored and enlarged in the 1870s, when the Gothic tower was added. Crawford Priory stands near the River Eden. It later became the property of Lady Gertrude Cochrane, whose father was the 6th Earl of Glasgow.
