Description Rossend Castle, Burntisland

Date 1/1/1880 to 31/12/1880

Collection Records of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network (SCRAN), Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 447855

Scope and Content Railway lines cut into the base of a hill below an L-plan stone tower house with flagpole. The tall stone walls revet the hill and carry a footpath past a whitewashed house, above the level of the tracks. Bare trees fill the skyline round the castle. Wooden benches are placed at intervals along the footpath. The older tower part of the castle has battlements and an overhang near the top. Rossend Castle guards the harbour, and the main tower was built in 1544, the rest added in the 17th century. Queen Mary visited here in 1563 and the castle surrendered to Cromwell's forces in 1653. It is now used as offices.
