The tall stone tower has rounded corners and a few small windows below the main roofline. A roofless projecting tower rises to full height on the right and low courtyard buildings are visible on the left. The castle, partly a peel tower built to withstand raids on the border between Scotland and England, dates from the late 12th century, remodelled in the 17th century and again in the 19th. The current owners are the Earls of Wemyss.
