The old tower to the left of the cathedral gable is St Rule's (St Regulus) Church tower. St Andrews had an inshore fishing fleet; the fishing quarter was sited round the harbour and extended along North Street. Trading ships came in from various ports and St Andrews had some commercial importance in the 16th century.
