Scope and Content View of an old mill set on a wooded riverbank, with a young girl in an apron standing beside the waterwheel. St Andrews once had a number of mills, this one was powered by water, but ready-made windmills were also being imported from Ghent in the 16th century. The Lawmill belonged to St Andrews Priory and can be dated from the 16th century but may be even earlier: see Raymond Lamont-Brown 'The life and times of St Andrews', 1989.
