Scope and Content Rough grass area with roofless Norman chapel enclosed by a low boundary wall. Church with squat tower over crossing of nave, transepts and choir in background. Ornate moulding round chapel doorway. Church with row of round windows above nave doorway and Gothic windows in the side walls. Square openings with tracery in the tower. The first religious community was founded by St Columba in 563. The remains of the 16th century cathedral of the Isles were given to the Church of Scotland in 1899 and restored. In 1938 the Iona Cathedral Trust was set up and the buildings given to the Iona Community for the use of all Christians.
